How to Learn Perspective

You do not need to begin with geometry, technical terminology or formal perspective theory. Perspective can be learned gradually by looking, comparing, experimenting, drawing, photographing and asking simple questions about why things appear as they do.

There is no single correct way to learn the subject. Some people understand perspective best through images, some through practical exercises, some through cameras or drawing, and others through geometry and theory.

The best approach is often to combine several of these methods and move into deeper material only when it becomes useful.


Begin by Looking

The simplest way to begin learning perspective is to look more carefully at the world around you.

Notice what happens when you:

  • walk towards or away from an object;
  • look along a road, corridor or railway line;
  • move from one side of an object to the other;
  • look at something from above and then from below;
  • compare nearby and distant objects;
  • watch one object pass in front of another;
  • look at reflections in windows or mirrors.

You are already observing perspective whenever size, position, apparent shape, overlap or direction changes with viewpoint or distance.

Move Around

Perspective is easier to understand when you realise that a view is not fixed.

Move your head, change your height, step sideways or walk around an object. The physical object may remain unchanged, but its appearance changes because your relationship to it has changed.

Simple changes of viewpoint can teach some of the most important lessons in perspective without requiring any drawing or mathematics.


Compare Views and Images

Comparison is one of the most useful ways to learn perspective.

Look at two photographs of the same object taken from different positions. Compare a wide-angle photograph with a more distant view. Compare what you see directly with what appears in a photograph, drawing or screen image.

Ask simple questions:

  • What changed?
  • What stayed the same?
  • Which objects became larger or smaller?
  • Which shapes appear different?
  • What became hidden or revealed?
  • Did any lines appear to converge?
  • How did changing the viewpoint alter the image?

You do not need to know the technical names for every effect at first. Learning to notice the differences is already an important part of learning perspective.


Use a Camera as a Learning Tool

A camera provides an easy way to experiment with perspective because you can record different views and compare them afterwards.

Photograph the same object from several positions. Move closer and farther away. Raise and lower the camera. Change the direction in which it points. Compare the resulting images.

This helps reveal the effects of viewpoint, distance, direction, framing and optical imaging in a direct and memorable way.

Learn by Drawing

Drawing is another powerful way to explore perspective, but you do not need to become an artist to benefit from it.

Simple lines, boxes and diagrams can help you understand viewpoint, eye level, vanishing points, depth and spatial relationships.

Do not worry about producing a beautiful drawing. The purpose of an exercise can simply be to discover why a particular visual effect occurs.

Use Diagrams to See Relationships

Some ideas are easier to understand visually than through words alone.

Throughout the PRC website, diagrams show how viewpoints, objects, images, processes and perspective concepts relate to one another. Many diagrams also provide direct links between related subjects.

You do not have to memorise every term in a diagram. First use it to see the overall relationship. Return to the details later as your understanding develops.


Learn the Words Gradually

Perspective has a large vocabulary, and some terms have different meanings in different disciplines. This can make the subject appear more difficult than it really is.

Do not try to learn all the terminology at once.

Begin with a few familiar ideas such as viewpoint, distance, direction, apparent size, horizon and vanishing point. Add new terms when you encounter a reason to use them.

Theory Can Come Later

Formal theory is useful because it explains why perspective effects occur and how different kinds of perspective relate to one another. But it does not have to be your starting point.

It is often easier to understand a principle after you have already seen or experienced the effect it describes.

For example, you can notice that parallel railway lines appear to approach one another long before you need to study the geometry of vanishing points. You can see that a table changes apparent shape as you move around it before learning the formal language used to describe that change.

Observation can therefore come first; explanation can follow.

Ask Questions

You do not need to study perspective as a continuous course. A question can be just as good a starting point.

Why do distant things look smaller? Why do photographs sometimes look distorted? Why do parallel lines appear to converge? Why does a building look different when photographed from below? Why does a wide-angle image feel different from what you remember seeing?

Following one question often leads naturally to several related ideas. This is one reason the PRC website is designed for exploration as well as sequential study.


Learn in the Way That Suits You

Different approaches suit different learners.

  • If you learn visually, begin with images, diagrams and comparisons.
  • If you learn practically, experiment with viewpoint, cameras and drawing.
  • If you learn through explanation, begin with introductory pages and definitions.
  • If you like history, follow the development of perspective through art, optics, geometry and imaging.
  • If you prefer structured study, use the Study Guide and move gradually into more advanced material.
  • If you already have a question, begin with that question and explore the related concepts.

There is no requirement to follow all of these routes or to follow them in a particular order.


A Simple Learning Method

If you are unsure how to proceed, try this simple sequence:

  1. Look — notice a perspective effect in the real world or an image.
  2. Compare — change viewpoint, distance or image and see what changes.
  3. Ask — decide what you want to understand about the effect.
  4. Explore — use a diagram, tutorial, definition or related PRC page.
  5. Try it — repeat the observation, drawing or photographic experiment yourself.
  6. Go deeper — study the underlying theory only when you want a fuller explanation.
