Curvilinear perspective images represent spatial fields through curved or non-rectilinear image structures. Unlike conventional rectilinear Linear Perspective, in which straight spatial lines are generally represented as straight image lines, Curvilinear Perspective allows some straight spatial directions to appear as curves in order to organise wider, taller, panoramic or hemispherical fields.

Basic Curvilinear Perspective
Curvilinear Perspective uses curved or transformed image geometry to organise a wider spatial field. Straight spatial lines may therefore become curved image lines according to the selected projection or mapping system.
Four-Point Perspective
Four-point perspective can organise a very wide horizontal or cylindrical field through several directional limits. Curved lines help distribute lateral recession across a much broader view than ordinary rectilinear perspective.
Five-Point Perspective
Five-point perspective can organise an approximately hemispherical field with principal directional points at the centre, left, right, top and bottom. It is one of the best-known graphical forms of wide-field Curvilinear Perspective.
Fisheye Perspective
Fisheye Perspective is an extreme wide-angle curvilinear form. It can capture a very broad angular field by deliberately bending straight spatial lines according to a non-rectilinear optical or mathematical mapping.
Cylindrical Perspective
Cylindrical perspective organises an extended field around a cylindrical geometry. It is particularly suited to broad horizontal views, panoramic interiors and representations that extend substantially to the left and right of the central viewing direction.
Panoramic Curvilinear Views
Panoramic images extend the represented field beyond an ordinary single view. Curvilinear or cylindrical mapping can organise this extended field continuously while redistributing peripheral directions and scale.
Hemispherical & Spherical Images
Curvilinear systems can organise a hemisphere or a transformed portion of a sphere. These images connect closely with Spherical Perspective, although a curvilinear image does not necessarily represent the complete surrounding sphere.

Curvilinear systems occur in graphical construction, fisheye photography, digital panoramas, immersive imagery and artistic representation. Different media can produce similar curved image structures through very different processes.
What curvilinear perspective images show
Curvilinear Perspective describes systems in which the geometry of projection, the image surface or the transformation applied to the image causes some straight spatial lines to appear curved. The defining curvature therefore arises from the perspective system itself rather than simply from curved objects within the represented scene.
A curvilinear image may include a central viewing direction, lateral vanishing directions, upper and lower directional limits, curved horizontal or vertical lines, peripheral compression and an unusually wide field of view.

Curvilinear and linear perspective
Linear and Curvilinear Perspective offer different ways of organising projected space. Conventional rectilinear Linear Perspective normally uses a flat picture plane and preserves straight spatial lines as straight image lines.
Curvilinear Perspective redistributes the represented field differently. It can accommodate much wider or more multidirectional views, but in doing so some straight spatial directions may become curved within the image.
This creates an important representational trade-off. Rectilinear projection preserves straightness but can strongly expand forms towards the margins of a very wide field. Curvilinear projection can redistribute peripheral angular space more continuously, but it generally sacrifices the straightness of some spatial lines.
The wide-field problem
A conventional rectilinear picture plane works especially well for moderate fields of view. As the represented angular field becomes very wide, however, the scale of objects and spaces towards the image margins can increase substantially.
Rounded forms may appear stretched, figures can become laterally elongated and peripheral areas can occupy disproportionately large parts of the image. These effects arise from the attempt to place an increasingly wide angular field onto one flat rectilinear plane.
Curvilinear systems address this problem by reorganising the field through cylindrical, hemispherical, radial, azimuthal or other transformed geometries. The result can represent peripheral directions more continuously, although the transformation introduces its own characteristic curvature.
Four- and five-point perspective
Curvilinear Perspective includes several graphical systems identified by the number and arrangement of their principal directional points.
Four-point perspective is particularly associated with broad horizontal or cylindrical fields and can organise directions extending substantially to the left and right of the observer.
Five-point perspective extends this structure by incorporating central, left, right, upper and lower directions. It can represent an approximately hemispherical field approaching 180 degrees and is one of the most familiar graphical forms of Curvilinear Perspective.

Curvilinear and panoramic perspective
Curvilinear and Panoramic Perspective overlap closely, but they describe different aspects of an image.
Panoramic Perspective concerns principally the extent of the represented field. A panorama may be cylindrical, spherical, rectilinear, stitched, multi-view or interactive.
Curvilinear Perspective concerns principally the geometry through which that field is organised. A curvilinear image may therefore be panoramic, but not every panorama is necessarily curvilinear.
A useful distinction is that panoramic perspective concerns how much of the surrounding field is represented, while curvilinear perspective concerns how that field is mapped.

Curvilinear and spherical perspective
Curvilinear and Spherical Perspective are also closely related without being identical. A curvilinear system may represent a wide frontal field, a cylindrical region, one hemisphere or another transformed portion of a sphere.
Spherical Perspective can extend further to represent the complete surrounding sphere, including directions in front of, behind, above, below and to either side of the observer.
Five-point Curvilinear Perspective is therefore commonly associated with a hemispherical field, while six-point or other spherical systems may attempt to organise the complete 360-degree environment.

Graphical and optical curvilinear images
Curvilinear Perspective can arise through several different processes. It may be constructed graphically, calculated mathematically, formed by an optical instrument or generated and transformed digitally.
Optical examples include fisheye lenses, panoramic mirrors, reflecting spheres, cylindrical mirrors, hemispherical cameras and other systems deliberately designed to record unusually wide angular fields.
The curved lines produced by such systems should not automatically be treated as accidental lens distortion. In a deliberately curvilinear optical system, the curvature forms part of the selected projection itself.
Curvilinear perspective across different media
Curvilinear image structures occur across drawing, painting, photography, cinema, optical instruments, computer graphics, virtual environments and immersive display systems.
Artists can use curved projection to represent extensive interiors, surrounding environments or several spatial directions within one image. Optical systems can capture extreme wide-angle views, while digital systems can transform between fisheye, cylindrical, spherical and rectilinear mappings.
The visible image structure may therefore be similar even when the process producing it is graphical, optical or computational.

What to look for in a curvilinear perspective image
- straight spatial lines represented by curved image lines;
- a substantially extended or unusually wide field of view;
- lateral, upper and lower directional limits in addition to a central viewing direction;
- curved horizontal, vertical or diagonal line systems;
- compressed or redistributed peripheral space;
- a circular, elliptical, cylindrical or hemispherical image organisation;
- several principal vanishing or directional points;
- four- or five-point graphical construction;
- fisheye, cylindrical, azimuthal or other non-rectilinear mapping;
- whether the image represents a wide frontal field, panorama, hemisphere or complete surrounding environment;
- whether its curvature arises graphically, mathematically, optically or digitally; and
- whether apparent curvature belongs to the projection system rather than merely to curved objects within the scene.
A Curvilinear Perspective image should therefore be identified through the geometry of its projection or mapping rather than simply by the presence of curved lines within the represented subject.
