Panoramic and 360-degree perspective images extend the represented field beyond the limits of an ordinary single frontal view. They may show a broad horizontal scene, a continuous cylindrical field, a complete 360-degree revolution around the observer, or a full spherical environment extending above and below as well as around the horizon.

Wide Panoramic Views
A panoramic image represents a field substantially wider than an ordinary single view. It may extend across a broad landscape, interior or urban scene without necessarily completing a full 360-degree revolution.
Cylindrical Panoramas
Cylindrical panoramic perspective organises the surrounding horizontal field around a cylindrical geometry. It is particularly suited to very wide views and complete horizontal panoramas extending continuously around the observer.
360-Degree Horizontal Views
A 360-degree panorama completes a full horizontal revolution around the observer. The beginning and end of the image correspond to the same surrounding direction, creating a continuous circular field.
Full Spherical 360° Views
A full spherical panorama extends beyond the 360-degree horizontal field to include directions above and below the observer. It therefore represents the complete surrounding sphere rather than only a horizontal band.
Equirectangular 360° Images
An equirectangular image unfolds a complete spherical environment into a flat rectangular map. Horizontal position corresponds to direction around the observer, while vertical position represents directions from below to above.
Stitched Panoramic Images
Many panoramas are assembled from several overlapping photographs taken from successive viewing directions. Digital stitching combines these separate images into one extended panoramic field.
Architecture & Interior Panoramas
Panoramic imaging is particularly useful for interiors and architectural environments because it can show relationships extending far beyond the limits of a conventional camera view, including spaces to either side of the initial viewing direction.
Virtual Tours & Immersive 360° Views
Interactive 360-degree systems allow the viewer to look around within a panoramic environment. The underlying image may contain the complete surrounding field while only the selected viewing direction is displayed at any one moment.
What panoramic perspective images show
Panoramic Perspective concerns the representation of an extended field of view. The defining characteristic is therefore not one particular projection geometry but the amount of surrounding space incorporated into the image.
A panorama may represent a moderately wide field, an extreme horizontal field, a complete 360-degree revolution or a full spherical environment. Different projection systems can then be used to map that extended field onto a planar, cylindrical, spherical or interactive display.
This distinguishes panoramic extent from the particular geometrical method through which the panorama is constructed or displayed.
Panoramic perspective and field of view
An ordinary frontal perspective image records or represents only a limited angular field. Panoramic systems extend this field laterally and, in some forms, vertically as well.
The larger the represented field becomes, the more difficult it is to preserve all of the geometrical characteristics associated with a conventional flat rectilinear picture plane. Very wide fields may therefore require cylindrical, curvilinear, spherical or multi-image solutions.
Panoramic Perspective should consequently be understood principally as a question of field extent. The particular image geometry used to accommodate that field forms a second and separate question.
Wide panorama and 360-degree panorama
A panoramic image does not have to extend through 360 degrees. Many panoramas simply combine or project a field substantially wider than an ordinary single image.
A 360-degree panorama is a more specific form in which the represented field completes an entire horizontal revolution around the viewpoint. The left and right ends of a flattened 360-degree image therefore correspond to the same directional seam.
This distinction is useful because the terms panorama and 360-degree image are often used interchangeably even though one is the broader category and the other specifies a complete horizontal field.
360 degrees and the full spherical field
A horizontal 360-degree image should not automatically be equated with a complete spherical image. A cylindrical panorama may represent every horizontal direction around the observer while omitting substantial regions above and below.
A full spherical panorama extends through 360 degrees horizontally and approximately 180 degrees vertically, including the upper and lower directions of the surrounding sphere.
The distinction is therefore between a complete horizontal revolution and a complete surrounding spherical field.

Cylindrical panoramic perspective
Cylindrical projection is one of the most important geometries for panoramic representation. Directions around the observer are related to a surrounding cylinder which can then be opened into a flat rectangular image.
Such a system is particularly suited to long horizontal panoramas because the image can continue around the viewer without requiring the extreme lateral stretching produced by attempting to represent the same field on one conventional rectilinear picture plane.
A cylindrical panorama may extend through less than 360 degrees or complete the entire horizontal revolution.

Spherical panoramic perspective
Spherical panoramas extend panoramic representation from the horizontal circumference to the complete surrounding sphere. The observer can therefore look not only left and right but also upward, downward and behind.
A spherical panorama may be stored as a flattened map, but its intended spatial interpretation is spherical. When placed back onto an appropriate virtual sphere and viewed from its centre, the surrounding image becomes an explorable environment.
This relationship between spherical image space and flattened image format is central to many contemporary 360-degree photographic and Virtual Reality systems.
Equirectangular 360-degree images
The equirectangular format is a familiar way of displaying spherical panoramic information as a flat rectangular image. The full horizontal circumference of the sphere is spread across the width of the rectangle, while directions from the lower to upper parts of the sphere are distributed vertically. Other sphere-to-plane mappings include Stereographic Perspective.
Because a sphere cannot be flattened without transformation, the rectangular image can appear strongly stretched towards its upper and lower boundaries. This apparent deformation belongs to the flat mapping and should not be confused with the appearance experienced when the same image is viewed correctly within its spherical environment.
The flat equirectangular image is therefore best understood as a map of a spherical image rather than as the final intended view itself.
Stitched and multi-image panoramas
A panoramic image does not need to be captured in a single exposure. Multiple photographs can be taken from successive viewing directions and combined into one continuous image.
Successful stitching depends upon the relationship between viewpoint, image overlap and the geometry used to map the separate images into the final panorama. Errors in these relationships can produce visible discontinuities, duplicated objects or alignment problems.
Digital stitching has made this process especially important in landscape photography, architectural recording, scientific imaging, virtual tours and 360-degree documentation.

Panoramic, curvilinear and spherical perspective
Panoramic, Curvilinear and Spherical Perspective overlap closely but describe different properties of an image or system.
Panoramic Perspective concerns principally how much of the surrounding field is represented. Curvilinear Perspective concerns principally how that field is mapped through curved or transformed image geometry. Spherical Perspective concerns the relationship of image or viewing geometry to a sphere or complete surrounding directional field.
A single image can therefore be panoramic, curvilinear and spherical at the same time. The terms describe different aspects of the same representational system rather than necessarily competing classifications.
Panoramic photography and virtual tours
Panoramic photography can be produced using specialised panoramic cameras, rotating cameras, multiple cameras, fisheye lenses or sets of overlapping photographs combined digitally.
Interactive virtual tours extend the panoramic image into a navigable viewing system. The full environment remains available around the observer while the screen shows only the currently selected direction.
Several panoramic viewpoints may also be linked together so that the viewer can move between locations as well as look around from each one.
What to look for in a panoramic or 360-degree image
- a field substantially wider than an ordinary single frontal image;
- a continuous extended horizontal view;
- whether the image represents less than or exactly 360 degrees horizontally;
- whether upper and lower directions are also included;
- a cylindrical, spherical, curvilinear or rectilinear mapping;
- the seam joining the beginning and end of a complete 360-degree panorama;
- equirectangular or other flattened spherical image formats;
- visible transformations caused by flattening cylindrical or spherical image space;
- multiple photographs joined through digital stitching;
- whether the panorama is static or interactively navigable;
- whether the viewpoint remains fixed while the viewing direction changes;
- the distinction between a wide panorama, a 360-degree horizontal panorama and a complete spherical panorama; and
- whether panoramic extent, curvilinear mapping and spherical geometry are being treated as separate but related properties.
A panoramic image should therefore be identified principally by the extent of the spatial field it represents, while the terms cylindrical, curvilinear, spherical and equirectangular describe particular ways in which that extended field may be organised or displayed.
