Class Chaining

Class Chaining occurs when the two basic directional Perspective Classes operate sequentially within one perspective process or system.

Within Perspective Category Theory (PCT), perspective has two fundamental directional classes:

  • Viewing or Imaging Class — the image-forming or image-capturing direction;
  • Projecting Class — the image-projecting direction.

Class Chaining occurs when a perspective process passes from one of these directional operations to the other. A camera may, for example, first form or capture an image that is subsequently projected or displayed on a surface.

The basic class chain can therefore be expressed as:

Viewing or Imaging → Projecting


Class Chaining within Perspective Category Theory

Perspective Category Theory distinguishes Perspective Class from Perspective Category, Type and Form.

  • Perspective Category identifies the principal source or mode of a perspective process;
  • Perspective Class identifies the principal direction in which the process operates;
  • Perspective Type identifies a particular method, system, process or subdivision;
  • Perspective Form identifies the visual, optical, geometrical or spatial appearance produced.

Class Chaining therefore concerns direction. It does not describe which Perspective Categories are involved, which particular perspective type is being used, or what image form is ultimately produced.

This distinction makes it possible to analyse separately both how a perspective process is produced and in which direction its successive operations proceed.


The Viewing or Imaging Class

The Viewing or Imaging Class is the image-forming or capturing direction of perspective.

Light, visual information or spatial data passes from an object, scene or existing image towards an eye, sensor, image plane or imaging system, where a view, image, measurement or representation is formed, captured, presented or perceived.

This directional relationship can be represented as:

object, scene or existing image → eye, sensor or imaging system

A camera forming or capturing an image from incoming light provides a straightforward example of this direction.


The Projecting Class

The Projecting Class operates in the opposite principal direction.

Light, images, shadows, lines or spatial information are projected from a source, eye-point, projector, picture plane or representational system into physical, graphical, optical or simulated space.

This directional relationship can be represented as:

source or representational system → projected image, light or spatial information

A projector sending an image forwards onto a surface provides a simple example.


From imaging to projection

A basic Class Chain arises when an image is first formed or captured and is subsequently projected or displayed.

The sequence may be represented as:

spatial object or scene → image formation or capture → image projection or display

At the first stage, the process operates within the Viewing or Imaging Class.

At the second stage, it operates within the Projecting Class.

The complete system therefore contains both directional classes, but they perform their principal operations at successive stages.


A camera-projector system

A camera-projector system provides the clearest example of Class Chaining.

The camera first receives light from a physical object or scene and forms or captures an image. This is a Viewing or Imaging operation.

The resulting image may then be passed to a projector or display system that presents or projects it forwards. This is a Projecting operation.

The sequence is therefore:

physical scene → camera/image formation → recorded or formed image → projection/display

Or, in terms of Perspective Class:

Viewing or Imaging → Projecting

The complete process constitutes a Class Chain because the two directional classes operate successively within the same broader perspective system.


Why the order matters

The concept of Class Chaining identifies not merely the presence of the two Perspective Classes, but their sequential relationship.

An image-forming operation precedes an image-projecting operation. The output of the first stage becomes the input or basis of the second.

This can be simplified as:

capture → image → projection

The resulting system therefore contains a directional transition from acquiring or forming visual information to sending or presenting visual information forwards.

Class Chaining makes this directional sequence explicit.


Class Chaining and Class Overloading

Class Chaining should be distinguished carefully from Class Overloading.

Both involve the Viewing or Imaging and Projecting Classes, but their relationship differs.

Class Chaining occurs when the two classes operate sequentially.

Class Overloading occurs when one process or system performs both image-forming or capturing and image-projecting roles at the same time.

The distinction can therefore be summarised as:

Class Chaining = Viewing or Imaging → Projecting
Class Overloading = Viewing or Imaging + Projecting simultaneously

This temporal distinction allows two systems containing the same basic directional classes to be classified differently according to how those operations are organised.


Class Chaining and Category Chaining

Class Chaining should also be distinguished from Category Chaining.

A Perspective Class identifies the direction of a perspective process.

A Perspective Category identifies its source or mode.

Class Chaining therefore describes a sequence of directional operations, whereas Category Chaining describes a sequence of Perspective Categories or modes.

For example, the same system might contain:

Class chain: Viewing or Imaging → Projecting

and simultaneously:

Category chain: Optical → Instrument → New Media

The first sequence tells us in which directions the perspective process operates. The second tells us which modes or means participate in the process.


Direction and mode are separate dimensions

The distinction between Class Chaining and Category Chaining demonstrates an important principle of Perspective Category Theory: direction and mode are independent analytical properties.

An Instrument Perspective system, for example, may form or capture an image and therefore operate in the Viewing or Imaging Class. Another Instrument Perspective process may project an image and therefore operate in the Projecting Class.

The Category may remain Instrument Perspective while the directional Class changes.

Similarly, a Class Chain can pass through several Perspective Categories as the image moves through different optical, instrumental or computational stages.

A complete perspective description may therefore require both a Category Chain and a Class Chain.


Class Chaining and Category Overloading

Category Overloading describes another different relationship.

Category Overloading occurs when one perspective term, type or process legitimately belongs to more than one Perspective Category or mode.

Class Chaining instead describes the successive operation of the two directional Perspective Classes.

Thus:

Class Chaining → sequential directions
Category Overloading → multiple categorical memberships

A perspective system may contain both. A process within a Class Chain may itself belong to several Perspective Categories.


Class Chaining and Mixed Perspective

Mixed Perspective describes a perspective system in which both basic directional classes—Viewing or Imaging and Projecting—operate.

Class Chaining provides one way in which the two classes can be related within such a system: they may operate successively as image formation or capture followed by projection or display.

The basic classes themselves remain unchanged:

  • Viewing or Imaging;
  • Projecting.

The presence of both directional operations does not create a third Perspective Class.

Instead, Class Chaining describes how the two existing classes can be connected within a more complex perspective process.


Class Chaining in complex imaging systems

Perspective systems can contain several stages between initial image formation and final projection or display.

An image may first be formed or captured, then processed or transformed, and finally projected or displayed.

Its complete process may therefore include several Perspective Categories while retaining the basic directional Class Chain:

Viewing or Imaging → intermediate processing → Projecting

The intermediate processes do not necessarily create additional Perspective Classes. The two fundamental directional operations remain image formation or capture and image projection.

This distinction keeps the directional classification simple even when the complete imaging system becomes technically complex.


Class Chaining and the image chain

Class Chaining can also be understood as one aspect of a broader image chain.

A perspective image may pass through a succession of stages between an original spatial scene and its final presentation to an observer.

For example:

object or scene → image formation → image processing → image display or projection → viewing

Different Perspective Categories may participate at different points in this sequence.

Class analysis concentrates specifically upon whether each principal stage is operating in the image-forming or image-projecting direction.

Class Chaining therefore provides a directional description of an image’s passage through a perspective system.


Functions are not additional classes

The concept of Class Chaining also helps distinguish Perspective Classes from the functions, goals and outcomes of perspective.

Activities such as:

  • representing;
  • measuring;
  • modelling;
  • matching;
  • creating illusion; and
  • producing immersion;

are not additional basic Perspective Classes.

These functions may occur within either directional class or through a perspective system in which both classes operate.

A system may therefore employ Class Chaining in order to produce a representation, measurement, illusion or immersive experience, but the intended function should not be confused with the directional structure of the process.


The two-class foundation remains unchanged

Class Chaining does not add another Perspective Class to Perspective Category Theory.

The two fundamental directions remain:

Viewing or Imaging
and
Projecting

What changes is their organisation within the complete system.

The classes may:

  • operate separately;
  • operate sequentially through Class Chaining; or
  • operate together through Class Overloading.

This provides a simple directional foundation capable of describing both basic and complex perspective systems.


Why Class Chaining matters

Many perspective systems do more than simply form an image or simply project one. An image may pass through several stages between the original object or scene and its eventual presentation.

Class Chaining makes the directional organisation of such systems explicit.

It helps distinguish:

  • image formation from image projection;
  • successive directional operations from simultaneous ones;
  • Class Chaining from Class Overloading;
  • directional chains from Category Chains;
  • Perspective Classes from Perspective Categories; and
  • directional processes from their functions, goals and outcomes.

Class Chaining is therefore an important concept within Perspective Category Theory because it identifies the sequential operation of the Viewing or Imaging and Projecting Classes within one perspective process or system.
