Classified Form

Classified Form identifies the generalised appearance of a Perspective Image or View when the output itself is classified by its characteristic visual, optical, geometrical or spatial organisation. In the Dictionary of Perspective, this is the output meaning of Perspective Form: the appearance produced by a Perspective Process.

Classified Form therefore answers a different question from Physical, Modelled or Apparent Form. Those concepts concern the Form of a particular object or scene and its appearance. Classified Form asks instead:

What kind of perspective image, view or geometrical output has been produced?

The basic relationship can be expressed as:

Perspective Output → Perspective Image / View → Perspective Form (Classified Output)

Perspective Form as Classified Output

A Perspective Form concerns the overall organisation and appearance of the resulting image or view. In geometrical cases this may include the number and position of vanishing points, the presence or absence of horizon lines, the behaviour of parallel directions, curvature, projection surface and the way space is compressed, expanded or transformed.

The same term can sometimes name both a Perspective Process and the Perspective Form produced by that Process. Linear Perspective, for example, can mean a graphical or mathematical method of projection, but it can also mean the resulting linear-perspective image geometry. Spherical Perspective can similarly describe a method of spherical projection or the spherical Form produced.

This page uses the terms principally in their classified-output sense.


Five Major Families of Classified Form

For the present PRC website classification, five major families provide a useful way to organise many of the most important geometrical Perspective Forms:

  • Central Perspective;
  • Parallel Perspective;
  • Spherical Perspective;
  • Cylindrical Perspective; and
  • Anamorphic Perspective.

These families are not intended to exhaust every Perspective Form in the Dictionary. Other forms include Axial, Inverted, Negative, Bifocal, Glide and Modular Perspective, among others. The five-family arrangement is therefore a practical high-level structure for navigating the major forms shown in the accompanying diagram.


Central Perspective

Central Perspective is a unidirectional Perspective Form in which a scene or object is viewed along a single principal optical line of sight. The resulting view is organised as a unified cone or pyramid of vision directed towards the scene and may be projected onto a flat or curved picture surface.

The Dictionary distinguishes this meaning from the broader mathematical idea of central projection. A common finite projection centre alone is not sufficient: Central Perspective additionally requires a unified principal viewing direction.

Linear Perspective Forms

The best-known Central Perspective Forms are the linear forms:

  • One-Point Perspective — one principal finite vanishing point for the main receding direction;
  • Two-Point Perspective — two principal lateral vanishing directions;
  • Three-Point Perspective — adds vertical convergence to the two lateral directions; and
  • Multi-Point Linear Perspective — additional directional or auxiliary vanishing points may occur where more complex sets of spatial directions are represented.

One-, two- and three-point perspective are therefore not separate top-level types of perspective production. In this context they are different classified geometrical Forms of Central / Linear Perspective.

Curvilinear Central Forms

Central Perspective may also include certain unidirectional curvilinear forms. In Curvilinear Perspective, straight directions in Object Space can become curved in the resulting image geometry, particularly across wide fields of view. Curvilinear systems may employ several principal vanishing points and can progressively approach the wider spherical family.

Importantly, the Dictionary excludes genuinely multidirectional Sphere-of-Vision and Sphere-of-Revolution forms from Central Perspective. Those belong within the wider spherical classifications discussed below.


Parallel Perspective

Parallel Perspective is the preferred geometrical term for a projection in which the projectors remain mutually parallel rather than converging from a finite centre of projection. The centre of projection may therefore be conceived as lying at infinity.

Because the projectors are parallel, moving an object farther away along the projection direction does not, by itself, cause the projected object to diminish in scale. Parallel Perspective consequently differs fundamentally from Central / Linear Perspective in its treatment of distance, vanishing and scale.

Oblique Perspective

In Oblique Parallel Perspective, the projectors meet the projection plane at an oblique angle. Principal forms include:

  • Cavalier Perspective;
  • Cabinet Perspective;
  • Military Perspective; and
  • General Oblique Perspective.

Opposing sets of edges can remain parallel in the drawing, and finite vanishing points and distance-dependent diminution are absent from the pure parallel-projection form.

Orthographic Perspective

In Orthographic Parallel Perspective, the projectors are perpendicular to the projection plane. Important forms include:

  • Isometric Perspective;
  • Dimetric Perspective;
  • Trimetric Perspective;
  • First-Angle Projection; and
  • Third-Angle Projection.

Isometric, Dimetric and Trimetric Perspective are axonometric forms in which the principal axes are projected according to different scale and foreshortening relationships. First- and Third-Angle systems belong to multiview orthographic drawing.


Spherical Perspective

Spherical Perspective maps directions around a Viewpoint onto a spherical surface, or onto a flat image derived from a sphere. It can represent a hemisphere or a complete 360 × 180-degree field, and may employ fisheye, equirectangular, stereographic or other spherical mappings.

Spherical Perspective is especially important for wide-field, panoramic, immersive and omnidirectional representation because it extends beyond the limited directional field of ordinary Central Perspective.

Single-View and Five-Point Spherical Forms

A hemispherical or fisheye-like view can compress a very wide field into a single image. Five-Point Perspective is one graphical spherical form: left, right, upper, lower and central vanishing points can be used to represent approximately a hemisphere of visual space.

Sphere of Vision Perspective

Sphere of Vision Perspective is a looking-out / looking-around system. The Viewpoint remains at a fixed spatial location while viewing directions extend around it. Taken to its full limit, the system can represent the entire surrounding scene in every direction.

Six-Point Perspective is a graphical form associated with this complete spherical field, adding the rearward direction that is absent from a five-point hemispherical representation.

Sphere of Revolution Perspective

Sphere of Revolution Perspective concerns the complementary looking-in / looking-at relationship. Instead of remaining at one central Viewpoint and looking around, the observer, camera or virtual Viewpoint revolves around a spatial object and examines it from multiple directions.

The distinction between Sphere of Vision and Sphere of Revolution is therefore fundamental: one explores the surrounding world from a fixed location; the other explores an object through changing Viewpoint positions.


Cylindrical Perspective

Cylindrical Perspective employs a cylindrical picture surface, a cylinder of vision, a cylinder of revolution, or a related cylindrical transformation of the resulting image. It is particularly important in panoramic representation, cylindrical screens, cycloramas and wide-field displays.

A cylindrical picture plane may be imagined as wrapping horizontally around the observer or scene. When such a surface is unfolded onto a flat plane, horizontal direction can extend through a very wide field while the vertical organisation remains comparatively stable.

Cylinder of Vision Perspective

Cylinder of Vision Perspective is a looking-out / looking-around form producing a complete circular or cylindrical field around a central observational position.

Cylinder of Revolution Perspective

Cylinder of Revolution Perspective is the corresponding looking-in / looking-at form in which multiple views of an object are produced by orbiting or revolving around it.

Multi-View and Unfolding Cylindrical Forms

The Dictionary also distinguishes cylindrical arrangements in which separately directed vistas are conjoined through successive changes of Viewing Direction, and unfolding curvilinear forms in which a cylindrical or panoramic vista develops continuously as the viewing relationship changes.

Vanishing-point counts can be used to describe particular graphical cylindrical constructions, but the broader cylindrical classification is defined primarily by the cylindrical viewing, projection or image structure, rather than by one fixed number of vanishing points.


Anamorphic Perspective

Anamorphic Perspective is a deliberately distorted form of projection in which a recognisable or correctly proportioned image is recovered only from a particular Viewpoint, viewing direction or optical device such as a mirror.

Anamorphic Perspective can also involve unequal magnification or minification along one cardinal image direction, producing an image whose horizontal and vertical scales differ.

Planar Anamorphic Form

In a planar or viewpoint anamorphosis, the distorted image is placed on a flat or other directly viewed surface and becomes coherent from a specially chosen viewing position. Street drawings, wall paintings and corridor illusions provide familiar examples of this principle.

Cylindrical Anamorphic Form

In a cylindrical-mirror anamorphosis, a deliberately distorted surrounding image is optically reorganised by reflection in a cylindrical mirror. The mirror changes the apparent scale and direction of the distorted source image so that the intended Form becomes recognisable.

Spherical Anamorphic Form

A spherical or curved-mirror anamorphic grouping extends the same principle to strongly curved reflective geometry. In the present website classification this is a useful practical grouping for anamorphic Forms whose recovery depends upon spherical or related curved optical surfaces, although the Dictionary treats anamorphosis primarily through viewpoint, distortion and mirror-based principles rather than establishing “Spherical Anamorphic Perspective” as a separate principal headword.


Classified Form Is Not the Same as Perspective Type

A Perspective Type identifies a particular method, system, process or subdivision. A Classified Form identifies the characteristic appearance or organisation of the output.

The same term can sometimes operate at both levels. Linear Perspective can refer to a method of construction and also to the resulting linear image geometry. Spherical Perspective can refer to a projection system and also to the spherical Form of its output.

This is why classification by Type and classification by Form must remain analytically distinct even when some names recur in both.


Other Classified Perspective Forms

The five major families above organise many of the most important Perspective Forms, but the Dictionary of Perspective records many additional and specialised forms. These include:

  • Axial Perspective;
  • Inverted Perspective;
  • Negative / Reverse Perspective;
  • Bifocal Perspective;
  • Glide Perspective;
  • Modular Perspective; and
  • numerous other specialised, hybrid and experimental Forms.

Classified Form is therefore an open and extensible part of Perspective Category Theory: new Perspective Processes, projection surfaces, viewing structures and image technologies can produce new characteristic forms of perspective output.


Why Classified Form Matters

Classified Form provides a way to identify a Perspective Image or View by what its output looks like and how its geometry is organised, rather than only by the process that produced it.

The distinction helps separate:

  • Perspective Process — how a view or image is produced;
  • Perspective Type — the particular method, system or subdivision involved;
  • Apparent Form — the appearance of a particular spatial Form; and
  • Classified Form — the general family of perspective output to which the resulting image or view belongs.

Central, Parallel, Spherical, Cylindrical and Anamorphic Perspective therefore provide major structural families through which the enormous variety of perspective images and views can begin to be organised and compared.
