Combined Perspective is a subtype of Composite Perspective in which two or more distinct views, images, perspective methods or spatial constructions are intentionally joined, superimposed or presented together within one view or image.
Combined Perspective can bring together a direct view of physical reality and a represented image, combine two or more different perspective spaces, or unite a broad spatial framework with the particular perspective appearances of objects contained within it.
The defining feature is therefore not simply that several Perspective Categories are involved, but that distinct perspective components are deliberately brought together within the presented view or image.
Within Perspective Category Theory (PCT), Combined Perspective is consequently more specific than Composite Perspective.
Combined Perspective within Perspective Category Theory
Perspective Category Theory distinguishes several ways in which perspective processes can interact.
Composite Perspective is the broad multi-category process, system, image or environment produced when several Perspective Categories operate in sequence or combination.
Combined Perspective identifies a more particular situation in which two or more views, images, methods or perspective spaces are deliberately combined within one presented view or image.
The relationship can therefore be expressed as:
Composite Perspective = broad multi-category perspective process or system
Combined Perspective = intentional combination within one presented view or image
Combined Perspective is therefore a subtype of Composite Perspective, rather than an alternative name for every multi-category perspective system.
Three principal forms of Combined Perspective
The Dictionary of Perspective distinguishes three principal forms of Combined Perspective:
- Combined real and represented views;
- Combined scenes or perspective spaces; and
- Combined universal and particular views.
These forms differ according to what is being combined and the relationship between the resulting perspective components.
1. Combined real and represented views
The first form combines a direct view of physical reality with a represented image, symbol or optical overlay.
A simple example is looking through a gun sight. The observer sees the actual external scene while simultaneously seeing a represented sighting mark or optical information superimposed upon that view.
An augmented-reality display can operate in a comparable manner. The physical environment remains directly visible while graphical, symbolic or other represented information is superimposed upon it.
The structure can be represented as:
direct view of physical reality + represented information → Combined Perspective
In this form of Combined Perspective, the two components normally remain visually distinguishable. The observer can recognise which part belongs to the direct view and which part has been added as a representation or overlay.
Real and represented perspective
This distinction between real and represented components is fundamental to many contemporary imaging and viewing systems.
A direct perspective view may originate in physical spatial reality, while a second perspective component exists only as an image, symbol, graphical construction or optical display.
Both occupy the observer’s presented view simultaneously, but they originate from different perspective processes and spaces.
Combined Perspective therefore provides a useful framework for analysing systems in which the observer simultaneously experiences:
- a physical environment;
- a graphical overlay;
- an optical display;
- digital information;
- a sighting or measuring image; or
- another represented perspective component.
The combination does not require the observer to mistake the represented component for physical reality. The components may remain clearly separable while still operating together as one visual system.
Combined Perspective and augmented reality
Augmented reality provides an especially clear contemporary example of Combined Perspective.
An augmented-reality system can combine a direct or instrument-mediated view of a physical environment with computer-generated graphical information. The two perspective sources are coordinated so that the representation appears in relation to the physical scene.
The resulting view may therefore involve several Perspective Categories—including Natural, Optical, Instrument and New Media Perspective—while also qualifying specifically as Combined Perspective because the distinct real and represented views are intentionally presented together.
This illustrates an important distinction:
Composite Perspective describes the multi-category structure of the complete system.
Combined Perspective describes the intentional joining of the constituent views within the presented image.
2. Combined scenes or perspective spaces
The second form of Combined Perspective occurs when two or more natural, artificial, graphical, optical or simulated scene spaces are intentionally conjoined to produce an apparently unified view.
The component spaces may possess different:
- sources;
- geometries;
- scales;
- viewpoints;
- spatial arrangements; or
- methods of production.
Nevertheless, they are deliberately coordinated within one resulting perspective view.
Methods capable of producing such combinations include Forced Perspective, image compositing, mirrors, mattes and projected backgrounds.
Unlike the first type, the individual components need not remain obviously separate. They may be made to appear as parts of one apparently continuous spatial scene.
Combining different spatial geometries
A particularly important form of Combined Perspective occurs when two or more differently scaled or structured spaces are visually connected.
For example, one part of a scene may contain objects positioned close to the observer while another portion contains objects at a substantially different physical distance or scale. Through careful control of viewpoint, geometry and image formation, the separate spatial components may appear to belong to a single coherent environment.
The resulting view may therefore conceal important differences between the actual geometries of its constituent spaces.
This kind of Combined Perspective forms the basis of a number of perspective illusions and special-effects techniques.
Combined Perspective and Forced Perspective
Forced Perspective can be used within Combined Perspective when real objects, scenery or spatial structures are deliberately arranged at different scales, distances or positions so that they appear to belong to one coherent spatial environment.
The physical components remain genuinely separate in object space, but their visual relationships are adjusted for a particular viewpoint.
Combined Perspective becomes especially important when Forced Perspective is used together with additional graphical, photographic, optical or digital imagery.
A physical foreground, for example, may be combined with a painted, photographed, projected or digitally produced background so that the resulting view appears to form one continuous scene.
The completed perspective may therefore incorporate both different spatial realities and different perspective methods.
Combined Perspective in cinema and visual effects
Cinema has provided many practical applications of Combined Perspective because filmmaking frequently requires different spaces and images to be brought together within a single shot.
Relevant techniques may include:
- front projection;
- rear projection;
- matte paintings;
- glass shots;
- mirror shots;
- split-screen and masked imagery;
- image compositing;
- Forced Perspective; and
- digital visual effects.
Actors photographed in one physical space may, for example, appear against a separately produced image or projected background. Different image and object spaces are thereby coordinated within one resulting perspective view.
The final scene may appear spatially continuous even though its components were produced through different methods or occupy entirely different physical or represented spaces.
Combined Perspective and Blended Scene Perspective
A related concept is Blended Scene Perspective, in which two or more separately structured or differently scaled spatial geometries are combined so that the resulting scene appears to possess one coherent geometry.
For example, different parts of an apparent room or landscape may actually possess different scales or spatial structures but be arranged so that, from a particular viewpoint, they appear to form one continuous space.
Combined Perspective is the broader concept concerned with intentionally joining different views, images, methods or perspective spaces.
Blended Scene Perspective describes the more specific spatial result in which separate geometries are made to appear as a single integrated scene.
Double Perspective
Double Perspective can provide a specialised form of Combined Perspective illusion.
In one form, two separate perspective spaces are visually conjoined to produce an apparently continuous direct or simulated view.
The technique may use differently organised or falsely receding spatial frameworks so that the resulting scene produces unusual effects of scale, depth or position.
Such arrangements can create apparently variable-scale spaces similar in principle to distorted-room illusions and may even permit regions of a scene to be concealed behind objects that appear to occupy different positions or scales.
Double Perspective therefore illustrates how Combined Perspective can join not merely two images but two separately organised perspective spaces.
3. Combined universal and particular views
The third form of Combined Perspective brings together a broad or universal spatial framework with the particular perspective appearances of individual objects located within that space.
A general perspective framework might establish the overall structure of the scene through elements such as a ground-plane grid, horizon or other spatial organisation.
Individual objects within that framework may then possess their own particular perspective appearances according to their positions, orientations or angles of view.
The resulting image therefore combines:
universal perspective structure + particular object perspectives
This distinction is useful because the overall perspective organisation of a scene and the individual appearance of each object within that scene do not necessarily constitute the same analytical problem.
Combined Perspective and Composite Perspective
The distinction between Combined and Composite Perspective is important.
Composite Perspective is the broader term. It identifies a multi-category perspective process, system, image or environment in which several Perspective Categories operate sequentially or together.
Combined Perspective requires a more specific relationship: two or more distinct views, images, methods or perspective spaces are intentionally joined, superimposed or presented within one resulting view or image.
Thus:
Composite Perspective → multi-category organisation
Combined Perspective → intentional joining of perspective components
Every Combined Perspective is therefore Composite in the broad PCT sense, but not every Composite Perspective need constitute Combined Perspective.
A simple photographic image chain, for example, may involve Natural, Optical, Instrument, New Media and Visual Perspective processes and therefore be Composite, even though no two distinct views or spaces have been intentionally combined within the presented image.
Combined Perspective and Synthetic Perspective
Combined Perspective and Synthetic Perspective can overlap, but they describe different relationships.
In a combined real-and-represented view, the constituent perspective spaces may remain visibly distinguishable. A graphical overlay viewed against physical reality is a clear example.
Synthetic Perspective, by contrast, describes the combination of two or more perspective processes into a perceptually unified view, image or spatial appearance.
Accordingly:
Combined Perspective may preserve visibly distinct components.
Synthetic Perspective emphasises perceptual unification.
However, some forms of Combined Perspective—particularly combined scene or multi-scene types—may also become Synthetic when their separate spatial components are made to appear as one visually unified scene.
The two concepts can therefore overlap without being synonymous.
Combined Perspective and Mixed Perspective
Mixed Perspective identifies another different relationship within Perspective Category Theory.
Mixed Perspective concerns the interaction of the two directional Perspective Classes:
- Viewing or Imaging Class; and
- Projecting Class.
Combined Perspective instead concerns the intentional joining of distinct views, images, methods or perspective spaces.
A system can therefore be Combined without necessarily being Mixed, or it may be both.
An augmented-reality or projection-based system, for example, may intentionally combine real and represented perspective components while also employing image-forming and image-projecting operations within the complete system.
Combined Perspective Image
A Combined Perspective Image is an image intentionally combining distinct perspective views or methods.
The image may bring together components that originated through different:
- viewpoints;
- image-forming processes;
- spatial geometries;
- scales;
- Perspective Categories;
- media; or
- methods of representation.
The combination may be obvious to the observer, as with a visible graphical overlay, or it may be constructed so carefully that the separate components appear to form one continuous spatial scene.
The concept therefore applies to both visibly separated and apparently unified combinations, depending upon the particular form of Combined Perspective involved.
Visually distinct and visually unified spaces
An important characteristic of Combined Perspective is that the relationship between its components can vary.
At one extreme, the constituent views remain clearly distinguishable. An observer looking through an optical sight can recognise both the external physical scene and the superimposed sighting image.
At the other extreme, different scene spaces may be adjusted so that they appear to constitute one continuous spatial environment.
Combined Perspective therefore encompasses a range from:
visually distinct combined components → apparently unified combined scene
The underlying components may nevertheless retain different sources, geometries, scales or methods even when their differences are concealed in the resulting view.
Why Combined Perspective matters
Combined Perspective identifies an increasingly important feature of visual and optical systems: the ability to place different views, spaces, images or methods into direct relationship within one visual presentation.
The concept applies to historical optical and graphical methods as well as contemporary photography, cinema, digital compositing, augmented reality and other New Media systems.
It helps distinguish several questions that might otherwise be confused:
- Are several Perspective Categories involved?
- Are different views or spaces deliberately joined?
- Do the components remain visibly distinct?
- Are different spatial geometries being made to appear continuous?
- Are real and represented images being viewed simultaneously?
- Are the constituent components perceptually unified?
These distinctions separate Combined Perspective from the broader concepts of Composite, Synthetic and Mixed Perspective.
Combined Perspective is therefore a significant concept within Perspective Category Theory because it identifies the intentional joining, superimposition or presentation of two or more distinct perspective views, images, methods or spatial constructions within one resulting view or image.
