Cylindrical Perspective is a family of perspective methods, views and display systems organised around a cylindrical picture surface, cylindrical field of vision or cylindrical movement around or within a spatial scene.
Unlike ordinary flat-plane perspective, cylindrical perspective can extend a view horizontally around the observer or around an object. It is therefore closely related to panoramic, curvilinear and spherical perspective, but it is not simply another name for Curvilinear Perspective.
The Dictionary of Perspective distinguishes several cylindrical forms, including concave cylindrical displays, central or multi-view cylindrical perspective, unfolding curvilinear cylindrical perspective, and convex cylindrical displays.
Cylindrical Picture Geometry
A cylindrical perspective may employ a cylindrical picture plane rather than a conventional flat picture plane.
The image is organised around the curved surface of a cylinder, allowing a much wider horizontal field to be represented continuously. The vertical dimension may remain comparatively unchanged while horizontal directions are transformed around the cylindrical surface.
This makes cylindrical geometry especially useful for:
- wide panoramic representations;
- 360° or surrounding views;
- cycloramas and dioramas;
- immersive display environments;
- looking-around perspective systems;
- multi-view representations of objects and scenes.
Cylinder of Vision
A Cylinder of Vision describes a perspective framework organised around the observer.
Instead of considering only a single forward-facing field, the observer can look around horizontally through a complete cylindrical field. This produces a looking-out or looking-around perspective.
The Cylinder of Vision therefore provides a useful conceptual model for panoramic, surrounding and immersive forms of perspective.
Cylinder of Revolution
A Cylinder of Revolution describes the complementary situation in which the viewpoint moves around an object or spatial subject.
Multiple views of a three-dimensional object may be produced by orbiting or revolving around it in a cylindrical path. This can be understood as a looking-in or looking-at perspective.
The distinction between the Cylinder of Vision and Cylinder of Revolution is therefore essentially one of orientation:
- Cylinder of Vision: the observer looks outward or around the surrounding scene;
- Cylinder of Revolution: the viewpoint moves around and looks inward towards an object or subject.
Cylindrical Perspective (1): Central / Multi-View
Central / Multi-View Cylindrical Perspective is produced by viewing in one direction and then rotating the viewpoint around a vertical or cylindrical axis to successive directions.
The resulting views may be joined together to form an extended cylindrical or panoramic representation.
Although the completed image may appear continuous, it can consist of separate but conjoined views captured or constructed from successive directions.
This form therefore relates to multi-view and patchwork forms of perspective.
Cylindrical Perspective (2): Unfolding / Curvilinear
Unfolding / Curvilinear Cylindrical Perspective produces a continuously changing cylindrical or curvilinear vista as the observer, viewpoint or optical system moves around a scene.
The Dictionary gives the example of observing a cylindrical perspective view through a glass ball while moving both the viewing position and the ball through a circular or cylindrical motion.
The resulting visual field may appear to unfold continuously, rather than being assembled from clearly separate views.
This form is closely related to spherical, curvilinear and glass-ball perspectives.
Concave Cylindrical Displays
A concave cylindrical display curves around the observer or viewing area.
Large cylindrical screens, cycloramas and panorama installations can surround viewers or cameras with an extended background image. Such displays may create a continuous scenic environment extending far beyond the field available on a conventional flat screen.
Cylindrical pictures used in dioramas commonly form panoramic or 360° scenes wrapped around an enclosure so that the observer can stand within the represented environment and look around it.
Convex Cylindrical Displays
Cylindrical Perspective can also involve a convex cylindrical display.
In this form, the display curves outward rather than surrounding the observer. Large convex volume screens can be used in staged and digital environments so that represented objects or imagery appear to extend into or interact with the physical foreground space.
Concave and convex cylindrical displays therefore use related cylindrical geometry but organise the relationship between image, viewer and physical space differently.
Cylindrical Pictures and Dioramas
A Cylindrical Picture or cylindrical diorama is a panoramic image designed to extend around part or all of a cylindrical enclosure.
The observer may stand inside the enclosure and turn to examine different parts of the surrounding scene. This enables a much wider field of representation than a single conventional flat image.
Cylindrical pictures have applications in:
- panoramic displays;
- dioramas;
- cinema and television scenery;
- cycloramas;
- virtual-production environments;
- immersive visual installations.
Cylindrical and Curvilinear Perspective
Cylindrical Perspective and Curvilinear Perspective overlap, but they are not identical.
Curvilinear Perspective is the broader family of perspective systems in which spatial straight lines may become curved in the image. Cylindrical Perspective specifically concerns systems organised through cylindrical geometry, a cylindrical image surface, cylindrical movement or a cylindrical field of vision.
A cylindrical perspective can therefore be a form of curvilinear perspective, but cylindrical structure provides its own distinct geometrical and visual classification.
Cylindrical and Spherical Perspective
Cylindrical and spherical perspective both extend representation beyond the limits of a conventional flat picture plane, but they organise the viewing field differently.
A cylindrical system principally wraps the view around a horizontal axis or vertical cylinder, whereas a spherical system can extend the viewing field in both horizontal and vertical directions around the observer.
Cylindrical and Panoramic Perspective
Cylindrical projection is one important means of creating an extended panorama. A surrounding scene can be represented around a cylindrical surface and subsequently viewed either on that curved surface or transformed into an unfolded panoramic image.
Panoramic Perspective is therefore closely related to Cylindrical Perspective, particularly where very wide or 360° horizontal fields are represented.
Why Cylindrical Perspective Matters
Cylindrical Perspective demonstrates that perspective need not be restricted to a single flat rectangular image viewed from one fixed forward direction.
By extending perspective around a cylinder, it becomes possible to represent surrounding space, successive viewing directions, panoramic scenes and immersive environments within a coherent geometrical framework.
It therefore occupies an important position between conventional flat-plane perspective, panoramic representation, curvilinear projection, spherical perspective and modern immersive display systems.
