Perspective is not a closed historical system. Although linear perspective and its familiar one-, two- and three-point forms remain important, they represent only a small part of a much larger and continually developing field. The Dictionary of Perspective identifies approximately 1,200 types and forms of perspective extending across natural, visual, optical, geometrical and technical systems, art, science, imaging and spatial representation.
New technologies continue to create new ways of viewing, imaging, projecting, constructing and representing spatial reality. At the same time, closer analysis of existing perspective phenomena can reveal distinctions that were previously unnamed, incompletely defined or grouped together. A new type of perspective may therefore arise either because a genuinely new visual or technical system has appeared, or because an existing process has been recognised as a distinct type and given a more precise definition.
What Makes a Type of Perspective New?
The word new requires care. A recently developed technology does not automatically constitute a new perspective type, and a newly named perspective type does not necessarily describe a newly created visual phenomenon.
The PRC therefore distinguishes between several possibilities:
- a newly created perspective system or application, made possible by technological development;
- a newly identified type or form, representing a perspective relationship that previously lacked a distinct classification;
- a refined type, in which an existing category or term has been more precisely distinguished from related forms; and
- a new combination of existing perspective processes, producing a recognisably different perspective configuration or outcome.
This distinction is important because perspective terminology has historically developed across separate disciplines. Art, geometry, optics, photography, cinema, computer graphics, vision and digital media have frequently described related processes independently of one another. Bringing them into a single taxonomy can reveal both unexpected similarities and previously unrecognised differences.
New Technological Perspectives
One of the clearest sources of new perspective forms is technological change. Volume 1 follows perspective from historical graphical and optical systems into photography, cinema, computer graphics, virtual environments and other contemporary technologies. The field now includes digital and computational forms alongside natural, optical, graphical, photographic and cinematic perspective.
The Dictionary of Perspective consequently includes such subjects as Computer/Digital Perspective, Digital Perspective, Augmented Perspective and several forms of Virtual Perspective. These form part of the larger taxonomy of perspective rather than simply being extensions of conventional perspective drawing.
New media also allow several perspective processes to operate together. Images may be generated computationally, viewed interactively, altered according to observer position, combined with real-world views, presented stereoscopically, projected into immersive environments or continuously transformed in real time. Perspective is therefore increasingly concerned not simply with the construction of a static image, but with relationships between observer, image, projection, display, movement and spatial environment.
Newly Identified and Refined Perspective Types
Technological novelty is only one source of new perspective.
The Dictionary of Perspective also identifies and refines perspective types by analysing relationships that can be present in older as well as contemporary images and systems. Many entries are therefore classified as new or new/refined, distinguishing them from established terminology.
Representative examples include:
- Combined Perspective — a refined category concerned with the combination of different perspective conditions or components.
- Composite Perspective and Composite Perspective Image — classifications concerned with systems or images in which different perspective elements are brought together.
- Manifold Perspective — identified as a distinct named perspective type or form.
- New Media Perspective and New Media and Multi-View Perspective — types associated with the enlarged possibilities of contemporary imaging and media systems.
- Viewing or Imaging Perspective — distinguishing perspective concerned with viewing or image formation from other perspective operations.
- Looking At/In Perspective and Looking Out/Up/Around Perspective — distinctions concerned with different relationships between the observer and surrounding space.
Other new or refined types in the Dictionary include Aspect Perspective, Constructed Perspective, particular forms of Zero-Point Perspective, and several forms of Zooming Perspective.
These examples demonstrate that the expansion of perspective is conceptual as well as technological.
New Perspective Through Classification
A major reason new types can be recognised is that perspective phenomena are often described too broadly.
Two images may initially appear to employ the same kind of perspective while differing in their viewpoint structure, projection, spatial organisation, viewing condition, optical formation or relationship to the observer. Conversely, apparently different techniques may prove to be manifestations of the same underlying perspective principle.
Classification therefore does more than attach names to visual effects. It allows a perspective system to be analysed according to what it is, how it operates, what relationships produce it and what kind of image or visual result it creates.
This is one of the purposes of Perspective Category Theory: to bring categories, classes, types, forms, phenomena, functions and products of perspective into a connected framework rather than treating the many forms of perspective as an unrelated collection of names.
The wider framework connects natural, visual, optical, geometrical and technical perspective and makes the relationships between them more explicit.
New Does Not Necessarily Mean Recently Invented
This distinction is particularly important.
A perspective type may be new to the taxonomy without being new to human experience. People may have seen, produced or used a particular perspective relationship for centuries without defining it as a separate perspective type. In such cases, what is new is the identification, terminology or theoretical distinction rather than the underlying phenomenon itself.
Conversely, technologies such as digital imaging, computer graphics, virtual environments and augmented systems can create genuinely new configurations that were impossible, or impractical, within earlier graphical and optical media.
The history of perspective therefore contains two simultaneous processes: the creation of new perspective possibilities and the continuing discovery and clarification of perspective relationships that were already present but insufficiently understood or classified.
An Expanding Field
Perspective continues to develop because the ways in which humans and machines view, image and represent space continue to develop.
The emergence of computer graphics, computer vision, virtual and augmented reality, AI, robotics, new displays and interactive spatial media extends the technical possibilities of perspective. At the same time, systematic analysis continues to reveal overlooked distinctions within familiar subjects such as projection, viewpoint, vanishing, spatial orientation, image construction and visual appearance.
The result is not the replacement of traditional perspective. Linear, parallel, curvilinear, spherical, photographic and other established forms remain parts of the field. Instead, the field itself becomes larger and more precisely structured.
The Dictionary of Perspective documents this expanded landscape by bringing together approximately 1,200 identified types and forms and more than 4,000 terms within a single reference and taxonomy.
New types of perspective therefore represent one of the clearest signs that perspective is a living and developing field: new systems continue to appear, while new classifications and distinctions continue to reveal relationships that older accounts did not fully recognise.
