Single Perspective

Single Perspective, also called Single Category Perspective, describes a perspective process, system, view or image involving one principal Perspective Category.

Within Perspective Category Theory (PCT), it provides the simplest categorical organisation of a perspective process.

In simple terms:

one principal Perspective Category → Single Perspective

Single Perspective should be distinguished from Composite Perspective, in which two or more Perspective Categories operate sequentially or in combination.


Single Perspective within Perspective Category Theory

Perspective Category Theory classifies perspective according to several different analytical properties.

A Perspective Category identifies the principal source or mode through which a perspective process operates. The principal categories include Natural, Visual, Optical, Mathematical, Graphical, Instrument, Simulated and New Media Perspective.

Single Perspective concerns the number of principal Perspective Categories involved in the process or system being analysed.

If one principal category is sufficient to describe the perspective operation, the system can be classified as Single Perspective.

If two or more categories participate, the system instead becomes multi-category and may constitute Composite Perspective.


Single Category Perspective

The alternative term Single Category Perspective makes the meaning particularly clear.

The word single refers to the participation of one principal Perspective Category.

It does not mean:

  • one vanishing point;
  • one viewpoint;
  • one eye;
  • one object;
  • one image;
  • one Perspective Type; or
  • one Perspective Form.

These are different analytical properties.

A Single Perspective system may therefore contain considerable geometrical or visual complexity while nevertheless involving only one principal Perspective Category.


A basic example of Single Perspective

The Dictionary of Perspective gives a simple natural example.

Sunlight may pass through the branches of a tree and cast shadows onto the ground.

Considered only as this physical environmental process, the perspective operation may be classified within Natural Perspective.

The basic relationship is:

Natural light and physical scene → projected environmental shadow

If no additional imaging, graphical, instrument, computational or perceptual stage is included in the particular analysis, this can provide an example of Single Perspective.


Why Single Perspective is relatively rare

Single Perspective is comparatively unusual because perspective images and views frequently pass through several different processes.

Using the shadow example, the original physical phenomenon may initially belong to Natural Perspective. However, as soon as a human observer looks at the shadows, Visual Perspective Type 2 participates in the complete viewing process.

The image chain has then passed through more than one Perspective Category.

Similarly, if the shadows are photographed, a camera introduces Optical and Instrument Perspective. If the photograph is digitally processed, New Media Perspective may also enter the chain.

What begins as a simple Single Perspective process can therefore become a much more complex multi-category perspective system.


Single Perspective and the image chain

The classification of Single Perspective depends partly upon the boundaries of the image chain being analysed.

A perspective process may be considered at one isolated stage or as part of a much longer sequence.

For example:

Natural phenomenon

may constitute a single-category stage.

But the complete chain might become:

Natural Perspective → Optical and Instrument Perspective → New Media Perspective → Visual Perspective Type 2

The broader the system boundary, the more likely it becomes that additional Perspective Categories will need to be recognised.

Single Perspective therefore requires careful identification of which part of the complete perspective process is being classified.


Single Perspective and Composite Perspective

Single Perspective and Composite Perspective provide a fundamental categorical distinction.

Single Perspective involves one principal Perspective Category.

Composite Perspective involves two or more Perspective Categories operating sequentially or in combination.

The distinction can therefore be expressed as:

Single Perspective = one principal category
Composite Perspective = two or more categories

This distinction concerns the categorical structure of the perspective system rather than the visible complexity of its final image.

A visually simple image may be Composite if several processes contributed to its production, while a visually complicated process may still be Single if it remains within one principal Perspective Category.


Single Perspective and Category Chaining

Category Chaining occurs when several Perspective Categories operate sequentially.

By definition, a genuinely Single Perspective process does not contain a Category Chain involving several categories.

The contrast is therefore:

Single Perspective → one principal category
Category Chaining → two or more categories operating sequentially

Once a second Perspective Category becomes a meaningful stage within the image chain, the process is no longer single-category in that broader analysis.


Single Perspective and Category Overloading

Category Overloading concerns a different problem.

Category Overloading occurs when the same perspective term, type or process legitimately belongs to more than one Perspective Category.

Single Perspective instead concerns a process or system involving one principal category.

Thus:

Single Perspective → one principal categorical mode
Category Overloading → one term or process possessing multiple categorical memberships

If a perspective process genuinely requires classification under several categories, it cannot be treated as purely Single Perspective at that level of analysis.


Single Perspective and Mixed Perspective

Single Perspective and Mixed Perspective answer different analytical questions.

Single Perspective concerns Perspective Category.

Mixed Perspective concerns Perspective Class.

Mixed Perspective identifies a system in which both directional classes operate:

  • Viewing or Imaging; and
  • Projecting.

Single Perspective instead asks how many principal Perspective Categories are involved.

The concepts should therefore not be treated as simple opposites. One concerns categorical organisation; the other concerns directional organisation.


Single Perspective and Perspective Class

A Single Perspective classification does not by itself determine which Perspective Class is operating.

A perspective process may operate principally in the:

  • Viewing or Imaging Class; or
  • Projecting Class.

The Category tells us the principal mode of the process.

The Class tells us its principal direction.

The term Single Perspective therefore concerns one axis of classification without replacing the need to identify the appropriate directional Class.


Single Perspective does not mean Single-Point Perspective

Single Perspective must not be confused with Single-Point Perspective or One-Point Perspective.

One-Point Perspective describes a particular geometrical Perspective Form in which one principal family of receding parallel lines converges towards a principal vanishing point.

Single Perspective instead describes the categorical organisation of the perspective process.

Thus:

Single Perspective → number of principal Perspective Categories
One-Point Perspective → geometrical organisation of the resulting perspective image

The similarity of the words single and one should therefore not obscure their very different meanings.


Single Perspective does not mean Single View

Single Perspective should also be distinguished from a single view or single-view image.

A single-view image is simply an image or representation made from one particular view or viewpoint.

That image may nevertheless have passed through several Perspective Categories during its production and viewing.

A photograph, for example, may be one image from one camera viewpoint while its complete formation involves Natural, Optical and Instrument Perspective and its subsequent viewing introduces Visual Perspective Type 2.

It may therefore be a single view without being Single Perspective.


Single Perspective and Perspective Type

A Perspective Type identifies a particular method, system, process or subdivision within one or more Perspective Categories.

A named Perspective Type does not automatically constitute Single Perspective.

The determining question is whether the particular operation being analysed remains within one principal Perspective Category or crosses several categories.

For example, Linear Perspective may be realised mathematically, graphically, optically or digitally. The name of the Type alone therefore does not establish whether the complete perspective process is single-category.

Single Perspective is consequently a classification of the categorical structure of the actual process, not simply the name given to its Type.


Single Perspective and Perspective Form

The resulting Perspective Form should likewise be distinguished from Single Perspective.

A Perspective Form identifies the visual, optical, geometrical or spatial appearance produced by a perspective process.

The same general Image Form may potentially arise through different categorical processes.

Conversely, one Perspective Category can potentially produce many different Forms.

Single Perspective therefore tells us how many principal categories participate, while Perspective Form tells us what spatial or visual appearance results.


The importance of analytical boundaries

Whether a process qualifies as Single Perspective depends upon how the perspective system is bounded for analysis.

A researcher might examine:

  • one isolated physical phenomenon;
  • one imaging stage;
  • one instrument;
  • the complete image-production chain;
  • the display system; or
  • the final human visual experience.

An isolated stage may involve only one principal Perspective Category, while the complete system containing that stage may involve several.

For this reason, the term Single Perspective should always be applied to a clearly identified process, system, image chain, view or image.


From Single to Composite Perspective

A useful way to understand the concept is to follow the expansion of a simple process.

Consider the Dictionary example of sunlight casting shadows through tree branches:

Stage 1:
Natural environmental process → Single Perspective

If an observer then views the shadows:

Stage 2:
Natural Perspective → Visual Perspective Type 2 → Composite Perspective

If the scene is photographed:

Stage 3:
Natural Perspective → Optical/Instrument Perspective → Composite Perspective

If the photograph is digitally processed and displayed:

Stage 4:
Natural → Optical/Instrument → New Media → display/viewing processes

This demonstrates why Single Perspective is often best understood as the limiting or simplest case within a much larger system of interacting perspective processes.


Why Single Perspective matters

Single Perspective establishes the simplest categorical structure against which more complex perspective systems can be compared.

It makes it possible to distinguish:

  • one-category processes from multi-category processes;
  • Single Perspective from Composite Perspective;
  • categorical simplicity from visual simplicity;
  • Single Perspective from One-Point Perspective;
  • Single Perspective from a single-view image;
  • Perspective Category from Perspective Class; and
  • an isolated perspective stage from the complete image chain.

The concept is especially useful because it demonstrates how rapidly an apparently simple perspective process can become Composite once additional imaging, viewing, instrument or computational stages are included.

Single Perspective is therefore a perspective process, system, view or image involving one principal Perspective Category.
