Vanishing Line is the image-space line containing the vanishing points of the different directions lying within a particular plane. Since a plane contains infinitely many directions, it can correspondingly possess a potentially infinite set of directional vanishing points, and these lie together upon its vanishing line.
The most familiar example is the horizon line, which in the standard level-view configuration is the vanishing line associated with the horizontal Ground Plane. But horizontal planes are only one case: every differently oriented plane can possess its own corresponding vanishing line.
A Vanishing Line is therefore a property of the perspective relationship between a plane, the directional systems contained within it, the viewpoint and the image or Picture Plane.
A Line of Vanishing Points
A plane contains many possible directions. For every family of mutually parallel lines lying within that plane, there is a corresponding vanishing point determined by that spatial direction.
As the direction of the parallel-line family changes within the same plane, the location of its vanishing point changes. All of these vanishing points nevertheless lie upon a common straight line in the perspective image.
That common line is the Vanishing Line of the plane.
The relationship can be expressed simply as:
Plane → many directions → many vanishing points → one Vanishing Line
Every Plane Orientation Has a Vanishing Line
A Vanishing Line should not be identified only with the horizontal horizon.
If a plane changes orientation in Object Space, its vanishing line changes position and orientation in the perspective image. A horizontal plane, vertical plane, inclined plane or oblique plane can therefore possess a different corresponding vanishing line.
This gives a general principle:
Every plane orientation has a corresponding vanishing-line relationship.
The particular position of the line depends upon the geometrical relationship between the plane, viewpoint and Picture Plane.
The Horizon Line as a Vanishing Line
The familiar Horizon Line is a special and important example of a Vanishing Line.
In the standard level-ground arrangement, the Ground Plane is horizontal. Different families of horizontal parallel lines may extend across this plane in many different directions. Each family possesses its own vanishing point.
All of these horizontal-direction vanishing points lie upon the same line: the ground-plane vanishing line, conventionally called the horizon line.
The horizon therefore contains far more than a single central vanishing point. It contains the vanishing points corresponding to all relevant horizontal directions within the plane.
Vanishing Lines and One-Point Perspective
One-point perspective can make the wider principle of the Vanishing Line easy to overlook.
In the familiar frontal configuration, one principal ground-plane direction recedes directly away from the observer towards a central vanishing point. Other ground-plane directions can nevertheless possess their own vanishing points elsewhere on the same horizon line.
The designation one-point perspective therefore refers to the dominant directional system used in the construction. It does not mean that the Ground Plane possesses only one possible vanishing point.
Vanishing Lines and Two-Point Perspective
Two-point perspective makes the Vanishing Line particularly easy to recognise.
Two principal horizontal families of parallel lines recede in different directions. Each possesses its own vanishing point, but because both families lie within or are parallel to the same horizontal Ground Plane, their vanishing points lie upon the same ground-plane Vanishing Line.
Thus:
Direction 1 → Vanishing Point 1
Direction 2 → Vanishing Point 2

Ascending and Descending Vanishing Lines
A Vanishing Line need not be horizontal.
If the plane represented in perspective is ascending or descending relative to the Ground Plane, its directional vanishing points may lie upon a correspondingly inclined Vanishing Line.
This occurs when representing surfaces such as:
- ramps;
- sloping roads;
- roofs;
- inclined floors;
- stairs and stepped structures;
- other planes that rise or fall through depth.
The Vanishing Line therefore indicates the directional orientation of the plane within the perspective system rather than simply identifying horizontal eye level.
Oblique Vanishing Lines
An obliquely oriented plane can possess an oblique Vanishing Line.
Where a plane is rotated or inclined relative to the principal horizontal and vertical reference planes, the line containing its directional vanishing points may itself appear at an oblique angle within the image.
The orientation of a Vanishing Line is therefore evidence of the orientation of the corresponding plane relative to the viewing and projection system.
Vanishing Point and Vanishing Line
A Vanishing Point and a Vanishing Line describe different levels of directional structure.
- A Vanishing Point corresponds to one spatial direction or family of mutually parallel lines.
- A Vanishing Line contains the vanishing points of the different directions lying within a common plane.
A single plane can therefore contain many directional line systems, each with its own vanishing point, while all of those vanishing points share the same Vanishing Line.
This relationship is fundamental to understanding perspective beyond the familiar language of one-, two- and three-point constructions.
Vanishing Line and Vanishing Trace
Vanishing Line and Vanishing Trace are closely related concepts, but it is useful to distinguish their analytical roles.
A Vanishing Line may be understood as the line of vanishing points belonging to the different directions contained within a plane.
A Vanishing Trace concerns the limiting image-space line associated with the vanishing of a system of parallel planes.
Under appropriate geometrical conditions the Vanishing Line of directional systems within a plane and the Vanishing Trace associated with parallel planes can coincide in the same image-space line. The horizontal horizon provides the clearest example.
The distinction is useful because one description concerns the vanishing points of lines within a plane, while the other concerns the directional vanishing behaviour of planes themselves.
Vanishing Lines Exist in Image Space
A Vanishing Line is not a physical line located somewhere in the distant world.
The original lines and planes remain in their actual geometrical relationships in Object Space. The Vanishing Line belongs to the perspective relationship through which those spatial directions are represented or appear within Image Space.
Objects do not physically converge upon a horizon or distant line. Their projected directions approach corresponding limiting image positions as their distance increases.
Vanishing Lines and the Picture Plane
The position and orientation of a Vanishing Line are expressed relative to the Picture Plane or corresponding image surface.
Changing the orientation of the represented plane, the viewpoint or the Picture Plane can change the position of its Vanishing Line within the resulting image.
The Vanishing Line should therefore not be regarded as a permanently fixed feature of space. It is produced by the geometrical relationship between the spatial plane and the particular perspective system through which that plane is viewed or projected.
Why the Vanishing Line Matters
The concept of the Vanishing Line generalises perspective beyond individual vanishing points.
It reveals that the directional structure of a plane is organised as a whole: individual directions generate individual vanishing points, while the complete family of directions belonging to that plane generates a common Vanishing Line.
This provides an important connection between lines, planes, vanishing points, horizon lines and the broader directional geometry of perspective.
