A Perspective Class may operate within one or more Category modes.
The Viewing or Imaging Class is one of the two fundamental directional Classes of perspective. It describes perspective processes in which light, visual information or spatial information passes from an object, scene or existing image towards an eye, sensor or imaging system.
In simplified form:
Object, scene or image → eye, sensor or imaging system
The Image-Forming Direction
The defining feature of the Viewing or Imaging Class is direction. Information associated with a spatial target proceeds towards a receiving or image-forming system.
The receiving system may be biological, optical, photographic, electronic, computational or otherwise technical. What unites these cases is not the particular instrument or medium, but the principal direction in which the perspective process operates.
Human Vision
Human vision provides a familiar natural example. Light from objects and surfaces in spatial reality travels towards the eyes. Optical processes within the eyes form retinal images that contribute to visual perception.
The process therefore operates from spatial reality towards the observer and belongs principally to the Viewing or Imaging Class.
Camera Imaging
A camera provides an artificial imaging example. Light from a spatial object or scene enters the camera and is organised by the optical system to form an image on film or a digital sensor.
The relevant direction is:
Scene → camera optics → image plane or sensor
Photography, cinematography and many forms of digital imaging consequently operate principally within the Viewing or Imaging Class during image capture.
Optical and Scientific Imaging
The same directional principle applies to many other imaging systems, including telescopes, microscopes, scanners, remote-sensing instruments and scientific detectors.
These systems may magnify, transform, filter, measure or computationally process incoming information, but they remain image-forming or information-receiving processes when their principal operation proceeds from the target towards the imaging system.
Captured Perspective Images
The Viewing or Imaging Class is closely associated with a Captured Perspective Image. In this directional relationship, an image of spatial reality is formed or captured through an eye, camera, sensor or other imaging arrangement.
This differs from a Projected Perspective Image, in which an image, light pattern, shadow or related structure is projected forwards into or across space.
Viewing or Imaging Class and Projecting Class
Perspective Category Theory recognises two basic directional Classes:
- Viewing or Imaging Class — object, scene or image → eye, sensor or imaging system.
- Projecting Class — light, radiation, image, shadow or beam → forwards into or across space.
The distinction separates image formation and capture from forward projection. A camera provides a familiar example of the first direction; a cinema projector provides a familiar example of the second.
A Class Is Not a Category
Perspective Class and Perspective Category describe different properties of a perspective process.
A Category identifies the principal source or mode of the process. A Class identifies its fundamental direction.
A camera, for example, may operate within Optical, Instrument and New Media Category modes while still belonging to the Viewing or Imaging Class during image formation or capture.
Systems Can Use Both Classes
The two Classes do not have to operate separately. A complete perspective system may employ both directions sequentially or together.
A camera-projector system may first form or capture an image in the Viewing or Imaging Class and subsequently project that image forwards in the Projecting Class.
More complex digital, augmented-reality and machine-vision systems may likewise combine receiving, imaging, analysing, displaying and projecting operations while still being analysable in terms of the same two fundamental directional Classes.
Viewing or Imaging Class Within the Analytical System
Within the PRC analytical framework, the Viewing or Imaging Class belongs to the Class analytical level.
The seven principal analytical levels are:

The Class level asks: in which fundamental direction does the perspective process operate? For the Viewing or Imaging Class, the answer is towards an eye, sensor or image-forming system.

One of Two Fundamental Perspective Classes
The Perspective Research Centre distinguishes two fundamental directional Classes of perspective:
- Viewing or Imaging Class — information moves towards an eye, sensor or image-forming system.
- Projecting Class — light, images, shadows or other structured information are projected outwards from a source or system into physical, optical, graphical or simulated space.
The distinction concerns the fundamental direction of the perspective process. It is therefore different from distinctions such as Natural, Graphical, Optical, Instrument or New Media Perspective, which describe categories or modes in which a perspective process may operate.
How the Viewing or Imaging Class Works
In a Viewing or Imaging process, a spatial object, scene or existing image acts as the source of visual or spatial information. That information is received by an observer or imaging system and forms a resulting view or image.
Depending on the particular perspective system, the receiver may be:
- the human eye;
- a camera;
- an optical sensor;
- an image plane;
- a scanner;
- a digital or computational imaging system.
The resulting perspective may therefore be visual, optical, photographic, digital or otherwise instrument-generated.
Viewing and Imaging
The expression Viewing or Imaging deliberately includes both direct observation and image formation.
Viewing occurs when a spatial scene or existing image is directly observed. Imaging occurs when a system forms, captures or presents a new image of that scene or object.
These processes share the same fundamental directional relationship: information from the object, scene or prior image is brought towards a receiving eye, sensor or image-forming system.
Examples
Typical examples of the Viewing or Imaging Class include:
- a person looking at a spatial scene;
- an eye forming a retinal image;
- a camera capturing a photograph;
- a video camera recording a moving scene;
- a scanner or imaging sensor recording spatial information;
- a digital imaging system generating an image from captured data.
The particular method may differ greatly, but the underlying directional principle remains the same.
Captured Perspective Images
The Viewing or Imaging Class is closely associated with the formation of a captured perspective image. In this directional sense, spatial reality is transformed into a view or image through an eye, camera or other imaging system.
This contrasts with a projected perspective image, in which an image, light pattern or other structured information is sent outwards into space or onto a surface.
Relationship to the Projecting Class
The Viewing or Imaging Class and the Projecting Class are not mutually exclusive within a larger system. A complex perspective process may use one direction, the other direction, or both in sequence.
For example, a camera may first capture information from a scene, after which a projector displays the resulting image onto a screen. The first stage belongs to the Viewing or Imaging Class; the second belongs to the Projecting Class.
This means that the two Classes describe directions of perspective activity, rather than mutually exclusive kinds of device or technology.
Category Modes
The Viewing or Imaging Class can operate within several perspective Categories. Depending on the process involved, it may form part of Natural, Visual, Optical, Mathematical, Graphical, Instrument, Simulated or New Media Perspective.
These Categories describe the mode or source of the perspective process. They do not replace the Class distinction. The Class identifies the fundamental directional relationship within the process.
Why the Distinction Matters
Many accounts of perspective use the word projection for almost every image-forming process. Distinguishing Viewing or Imaging from Projecting makes the direction of the process explicit.
A camera receiving light from a scene and a projector casting an image onto a screen are both perspective systems, but they operate in fundamentally opposite directions. The Class distinction provides a simple way of identifying that difference.
