Circular Perspective

Circular Perspective refers to perspective systems and images organised around a circular or horizontally multi-directional field rather than a conventional single rectangular view. It is closely related to Curvilinear Perspective, Cylindrical Perspective, Panoramic Perspective and Spherical Perspective, but is not identical to any of them.

The Dictionary of Perspective distinguishes two principal forms of Circular Perspective: Circular Perspective A, a circular or horizontally multi-directional perspective image, and Circular Perspective B, a panoramic capture and projection system designed for a circular 360-degree viewing environment.


Circular Perspective A is a circular or horizontally multi-directional perspective image organised around several principal spatial directions. The Dictionary describes such an image as comprising approximately three to four primary vanishing points, corresponding to three or four of the six cardinal spatial directions.

Instead of representing only a restricted forward-looking sector of space, Circular Perspective can incorporate substantially more of the surrounding scene. Directions that would normally lie outside a conventional rectangular perspective view can therefore be brought into the same image field.

This makes Circular Perspective particularly useful for examining how perspective changes when representation extends beyond the relatively narrow field normally associated with Linear Perspective.


Circular Perspective B refers to a panoramic image-capture and projection method in which a complete horizontal 360-degree vista is observed or recorded and subsequently displayed around the viewer within a circular theatre or comparable viewing environment.

Here the circularity does not refer merely to the outline of an image. It describes an entire capture–projection–viewing system: the surrounding scene is recorded across a complete horizontal revolution and presented around an observer rather than on a single forward-facing screen.

This form therefore connects Circular Perspective particularly closely with Panoramic Perspective and immersive imaging.


A closely related PRC concept is the Circle of View. In one sense, this describes a circular visual field encompassing either a complete 360-degree surrounding scene or a circular region of that scene.

In technical perspective, the term can also identify a circular boundary used to define the limits of a field of view. It may therefore refer either to a circular field projected onto the picture plane and into object space, or to the circular intersection produced where a cone of vision meets a picture plane.

The idea is important because it separates two questions: how much of the surrounding world is included, and how that field is projected or represented.


Circular systems can operate in two importantly different spatial ways.

  • Looking around: the observer occupies a central or relatively fixed position while the represented field extends around the observer.
  • Looking at: the viewpoint moves or revolves around an object so that different sides or aspects of that object become visible.

The second arrangement is closely related to Circle of Revolution Perspective, in which multiple views of a three-dimensional object can be produced by moving around it on a circular path. The first is more directly associated with the Circle or Cylinder of Vision and panoramic representation.


Circular and Cylindrical Perspective overlap closely but should not automatically be treated as synonyms.

A cylindrical system organises or projects the scene with reference to a cylindrical picture surface, cylinder of vision or cylinder of revolution. Circular Perspective is the broader idea of a perspective organised around a circular or complete horizontal directional field.

A circular perspective image may therefore be produced through a cylindrical system, but the terms describe different aspects of the perspective process.


Spherical Perspective can extend representation both horizontally and vertically around a viewpoint, whereas Circular Perspective is especially concerned with circular and horizontal multi-directionality.

A complete spherical system can potentially represent directions above, below, in front of, behind and to either side of the observer. By contrast, a circular or cylindrical system may concentrate on a complete horizontal revolution while representing a more limited vertical field.

The distinction becomes particularly important in panoramic, immersive and 360-degree imaging, where the terms circular, cylindrical and spherical describe different geometrical organisations of the represented field.


Circular Perspective is also closely connected with Curvilinear Perspective. When a very wide field is represented on a flat or curved image surface, spatial lines that remain straight in ordinary rectilinear perspective may be represented by curves.

This enables visual information from many directions to be compressed into a single image. The resulting geometry may employ multiple vanishing directions and a circular, cylindrical or spherical organisation rather than the simpler directional structure of conventional linear perspective.


Circular Perspective demonstrates that a perspective view does not need to be confined to a single forward-facing rectangular image. A perspective system can instead organise vision around the observer, around an object, or around a complete horizontal field.

Applications and related uses include:

  • 360-degree panoramic images;
  • circular and panoramic theatres;
  • immersive displays;
  • wide-field curvilinear drawings;
  • cylindrical image systems;
  • virtual and simulated environments;
  • multi-directional visualisation;
  • systems for viewing or recording an object from multiple surrounding directions.

It therefore provides an important bridge between conventional perspective, panoramic representation, curved projection surfaces and modern immersive imaging.
