Reverse Perspective

Reverse perspective is a system of spatial representation in which receding parallel edges appear to diverge rather than converge as they extend into pictorial depth.

In ordinary linear perspective, receding lines move towards one or more vanishing points situated within or around the image. Reverse and divergent spatial constructions reappeared in modern art as artists questioned fixed-viewpoint Renaissance perspective.

Cubist works fragmented objects and combined several viewpoints within one image. Other modern artists used divergent constructions to expand pictorial space, reveal multiple sides of objects or involve the observer more directly.

David Hockney has repeatedly discussed and employed reverse perspective. He relates it to movement, changing viewpoints and the limitation of treating the observer as a fixed point outside the image.
