Perspective of Forms concerns the projected appearance or outline of geometrical forms present in spatial reality. It examines what happens to points, lines, planes, figures and solids when their spatial Forms are viewed, imaged or projected through perspective.
The concept therefore concerns the relationship between a geometrical Form in Object Space and its corresponding appearance in a perspective image or view.
Perspective of Forms includes the perspective of points, lines, planes, figures and solids, together with the geometrical appearance transformations that occur through perspective.
Geometrical Forms in Spatial Reality
Spatial reality contains objects and structures that can be analysed through geometrical elements and Forms.
These may include:
- points;
- straight and curved lines;
- planes;
- plane figures;
- rectangles and polygons;
- circles and ellipses;
- cubes and other polyhedra;
- spheres and curved solids;
- regular solids;
- irregular solids; and
- complex surfaces and three-dimensional structures.
Perspective of Forms examines how such geometrical structures appear when related to a particular viewpoint, viewing direction and perspective process.
From Spatial Form to Projected Appearance
A Form existing in Object Space does not necessarily retain the same apparent geometry when represented in a perspective image.
The general relationship can be expressed as:
Spatial Form → Perspective Process → Projected / Apparent Form
A rectangular surface, for example, may appear trapezoidal or otherwise foreshortened. A circle may appear elliptical. Equal lines extending through depth may appear progressively shorter. Parallel directions may appear to converge.
Perspective of Forms studies these geometrical relationships between spatial Form and projected appearance.
Perspective of Points
A point is the simplest geometrical element that can be considered in perspective.
A spatial point occupies a particular position in Object Space. Through a perspective process it corresponds to a particular projected or apparent position in Image Space.
More complex Forms can be understood as arrangements of many such spatial points and relationships between them.
The perspective of points therefore provides one of the elementary foundations from which the perspective of lines, planes and solids can be understood.
Perspective of Lines
Lines are fundamental to geometrical perspective because their projected directions, lengths and relationships provide much of the visible structure through which Form is recognised.
Perspective can affect the appearance of lines through:
- apparent change of length;
- foreshortening;
- directional convergence;
- formation of Vanishing Points;
- changes of angular relationship; and
- changes in the apparent outline of the Forms they define.
Parallel spatial lines remain parallel in Physical Form, yet under many perspective conditions their projected appearances converge towards corresponding Vanishing Points.
Perspective of Planes
A plane possesses two-dimensional spatial extent and can contain many different line directions.
Its projected appearance depends strongly upon its orientation relative to the viewpoint and perspective system.
A plane viewed more directly may display a comparatively large apparent area. As its aspect becomes increasingly oblique, its apparent extent in one direction may diminish through foreshortening. Under a limiting edge-on condition, its visible area may approach a line.
The line directions contained within the plane can also possess their own Vanishing Points, collectively related to the plane’s Vanishing Line or Vanishing Trace.
Perspective of Solids
Three-dimensional solids combine points, edges, surfaces and volumes within a single spatial Form.
The perspective appearance of a solid therefore depends upon the combined appearance of its constituent geometrical elements.
A cube, for example, may present:
- different visible faces according to viewpoint;
- foreshortened plane surfaces;
- different apparent edge lengths;
- one or more directional Vanishing Points; and
- different overall outlines as the viewpoint changes.
The Physical Form of the cube can remain unchanged throughout these transformations of appearance.
Regular and Irregular Forms
Perspective of Forms applies both to simple regular geometry and to complex irregular spatial Forms.
Regular geometrical Forms are often easier to analyse because they can be described through clearly defined relationships of line, plane, angle, curvature and proportion.
Irregular natural Forms may require greater abstraction. A rock, tree, human body or complex landscape cannot necessarily be reduced exactly to a single simple geometrical solid, although aspects of its Form may still be modelled through points, lines, planes, curves, surfaces and volumes.
This is one reason for distinguishing Physical Form from Modelled Form.
Appearance Transformations
The Dictionary associates Perspective of Forms with Appearance Transformations.
These concern geometrical changes in the projected or apparent appearance of spatial Forms. Depending upon the perspective conditions involved, these may include changes of:
- apparent size;
- shape;
- outline;
- proportion;
- aspect;
- orientation;
- position;
- line direction;
- visible extent; and
- apparent spatial relationship.
These transformations belong to the perspective appearance of the Form and should not automatically be interpreted as changes in its underlying Physical Form.
Diminution of Size and Form
Perspective of Forms includes phenomena associated with diminution.
As objects or geometrical structures recede from the observer, their projected or angular extent can diminish. Increasing distance may therefore reduce the apparent size of an entire Form and the visible size of its constituent details.
At sufficiently small projected scale, some details may no longer be distinguishable and parts of the Form may appear simplified or disappear altogether.
Diminution therefore affects not only the apparent size of a Form but also the amount of geometrical structure that remains visibly distinguishable within it.
Aspect of Form
The aspect of a Form concerns how its appearance changes as its orientation relative to the observer changes.
A planar Form viewed frontally may closely retain its characteristic outline. The same Form viewed obliquely can appear increasingly foreshortened.
Aspect changes can therefore transform the visible geometry of a Form without altering its Physical Form.
This is especially important for planes, faces and surfaces, whose apparent shapes can vary dramatically according to viewing direction.
Vanishing and the Perspective of Forms
The appearance of spatial Forms is also affected by vanishing structure.
Parallel directions belonging to an object can generate corresponding Vanishing Points, while different directional systems lying in a common plane can produce Vanishing Points aligned upon a Vanishing Line.
These directional relationships contribute directly to the apparent structure and outline of geometrical Forms within the image.
A rectangular solid, for example, may involve several families of parallel edges, each producing its own directional vanishing relationship.
Perspective of Forms and Apparent Form
Perspective of Forms is closely related to Apparent Form.
Apparent Form describes the particular perspective appearance of a Physical Form under specified viewing, imaging or representational conditions.
Perspective of Forms examines more specifically how the geometrical elements and Forms making up spatial reality are projected or appear through those perspective conditions.
Thus, Perspective of Forms provides a geometrical way of analysing some of the structures that contribute to Apparent Form.
Perspective of Form and Perspective of Forms
Perspective of Form and Perspective of Forms are closely related terms but have distinct emphases within the PRC framework.
Perspective of Form is the broader analytical concept concerned with changes in apparent geometry, outline, size, shape, position and orientation.
Perspective of Forms specifically describes the projected appearance or outline of the geometrical Forms present in spatial reality — including points, lines, planes and solids.
The plural term therefore places particular emphasis upon the geometrical elements and Forms being projected.
Perspective of Forms Is Not Perspective Form
Perspective of Forms should not be confused with Perspective Form.
Perspective of Forms concerns the projected appearance of geometrical Forms present within the spatial reality being represented.
Perspective Form, by contrast, is a broader classificatory concept concerned with the overall characteristic geometrical, optical, visual or spatial Form of a perspective image or view.
For example, an image may possess a Linear Perspective Form, Parallel Perspective Form or another overall classified Perspective Form, while within that image individual points, lines, planes and solids possess their own projected appearances.
These are different analytical levels and should not be treated as synonyms.
Perspective of Forms Across Different Projection Systems
The same spatial Form can acquire different projected appearances under different perspective systems.
A cube, sphere, plane or other geometrical structure may appear differently under:
- Central Perspective;
- Parallel Perspective;
- Linear Perspective;
- Curvilinear Perspective;
- Spherical Perspective;
- Cylindrical Perspective;
- Oblique Perspective; or
- other Projection Modes.
Perspective of Forms therefore depends not only upon the geometry of the original spatial Form but also upon the perspective system through which it is viewed or represented.
Why Perspective of Forms Matters
Perspective of Forms provides a direct bridge between geometrical structure in spatial reality and geometrical appearance in a perspective image.
It enables perspective to be analysed not only as a complete image or projection system, but also at the level of the individual geometrical Forms from which objects and scenes are constructed.
The concept therefore helps distinguish:
- the Form existing in spatial reality;
- the geometrical model used to analyse it;
- its projected or apparent Form;
- the Perspective Phenomena affecting that appearance; and
- the overall Perspective Form of the resulting image or view.
In this way, Perspective of Forms connects the geometry of points, lines, planes and solids with the wider theory of Physical Form, Modelled Form, Apparent Form and Perspective Form.
