A Perspective Function may operate within one or more Category modes.
Capture / Project Function groups two opposed but closely related operations within a perspective process: the formation or capture of a perspective image in the image-forming direction, and the projection of light, images or spatial information forwards into space.
The pairing is functional rather than classificatory. Capture and projection do not form a third Perspective Class. Instead, they operate through the two fundamental directions already identified by Perspective Category Theory: the Viewing or Imaging Class and the Projecting Class.
Capture as a Perspective Function
Capture concerns obtaining, forming, presenting or recording a perspective image or view from a spatial object, scene or existing image.
In the Viewing or Imaging Class, light, visual information or spatial information passes towards an eye, sensor, image plane or imaging system. A view or image may then be formed, captured, presented, measured or perceived.
Examples include:
- the formation of a retinal image by the eye;
- photographic image capture by a camera;
- scientific or technical imaging by a sensor;
- recording an optical image;
- capturing a perspective view for later measurement or analysis;
- framing a selected part of a scene; and
- detecting Perspective Phenomena within an image or view.
Project as a Perspective Function
Project concerns sending light, images, shadows, lines, beams or other spatial information forwards from a source or representational system into physical, optical, graphical or simulated space.
This is associated with the Projecting Class, in which the direction of the process runs forwards from a source or system into spatial reality.
Examples include:
- projecting an image onto a cinema or display screen;
- casting a natural or artificial shadow;
- projecting light from a lamp, spotlight or optical system;
- graphically projecting lines from a station or construction point;
- projection mapping onto physical surfaces;
- projecting graphical or optical information into a viewing field; and
- projecting imagery or information within virtual, augmented or simulated environments.
Two Opposite Perspective Directions
The distinction between capture and projection can be expressed as two opposed directions:
Capture: spatial object or scene → eye, sensor, image plane or imaging system.
Project: source, image, shadow, beam or representational system → forwards into physical, graphical, optical or simulated space.
This directional distinction is fundamental. It prevents image capture and image projection from being treated as though they were the same process merely because both may involve light, images and projection geometry.
Capture and Projection Can Operate Together
A single perspective system may contain both directions in sequence.
A cinema system, for example, first captures a perspective image with a camera and later projects that image forwards onto a screen. Similar chains occur in television, digital imaging, projection mapping, augmented reality and many interactive visual systems.
The two operations therefore need to be distinguished analytically even when they form consecutive stages of one larger perspective process.
Principal Capture / Project Operations
Within the PRC function map, the Capture / Project family includes several related operations:
- Obtain a perspective image — form or capture an image of a scene or object;
- Project a perspective image — send an image forwards into or onto spatial reality;
- Frame — select and delimit the visual or image field;
- Detect Perspective Phenomena — identify relevant visual, optical or geometrical effects; and
- Prescribe image features — establish or control selected characteristics of an image or representation.
Natural and Artificial Capture / Projection
Capture and projection are not restricted to cameras, projectors or other human-made instruments.
Natural visual and optical processes may form or transmit perspective images, views, shadows and light patterns. Artificial systems may deliberately capture, calculate, project, display, simulate or transform comparable spatial information.
The relevant Perspective Category therefore depends on the source and mode of the process, while the direction of operation is described separately by Perspective Class.
Capture / Project Is a Function, Not a Product
A function describes what the perspective process does. A product describes what the process produces.
Capture or projection may therefore produce or contribute to a perspective image, view, measurement, calculation, representation, model or item of spatial information, but these outputs belong to the Product level rather than the Function level.
This distinction is important because the same product may result from different functions, and one function may contribute to several different products.
Relationship to View, Match and Represent
Within the compact Functions of Perspective map, Capture / Project is grouped beneath the broad View family because obtaining or presenting perspective imagery is a primary route through which spatial reality becomes visually accessible.
However, capture and projection may also support Match and Represent. A captured image may be measured or classified, while a projected image may communicate a representation, construct an illusion or contribute to an immersive environment.
The function families therefore overlap in practice rather than forming mutually exclusive compartments.
Capture / Project Within the Analytical System
Capture / Project belongs to the Function level of the seven-part analytical system:
- Category — principal source or mode;
- Class — fundamental direction;
- Type — method, system or process;
- Form — resulting appearance;
- Phenomenon — visible or detectable effect;
- Function — what the process does; and
- Product — what the process produces.
The Capture / Project pairing is therefore best understood as an operational description within a larger perspective system rather than as a separate Perspective Category, Class, Type or Product.
